Mangosteen, mangostin, Mangosteen Juice

Mangosteen,  Queen of Fruits!

Mangosteen is believed to possess many great health benefits.  At the tops of it's class, this 'Superfruit' goes beyond being sweet and tasty.  Nicknamed the "Queen of Fruits", Mangosteen (of no relation to the Mango) is a tropical fruit native to Southeast Asia.

The fact is, the Mangosteen Fruit is now being studied heavily in western medicine, and its full benefits are yet to be known.

One thing is sure, Mangosteen has many great properties.  Not your every-day fruit snack, Mangosteen (Garcinia mangostana L.) possesses more xanthones (a powerful group of antioxidants) than any other food source. We'll talk more about the purpose these xanthones play later on.

Because it has become so popular, The Mangosteen and Mangosteen Juices have become a target for both skepticism and embellishment. I personally love the fruit for its medical marvel, but am here to set the story straight in the most fact-based and unbiased manner possible.

Fairly new to the Western World, the Mangosteen has recently gained much attention because of the health benefits that it boasts.

To start I'll mention a few of the conditions that may benefits from supplementing with Mangosteen. Later on, we'll lay down the facts (HERE), and let you draw your own conclusions.

-     "Oxidative Stress is implicated as one of the primary factors that contribute to the development of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's Disease, Parkinsonism and neurological conditions like epileptic seizures, stroke, brain damage, neurotrauma etc. The increased formation and release of oxygen free radicals coupled with the rather low antioxidative potential of the central nervous system are the major reasons that account for the enhanced oxidative stress seen in neuronal cells." / Department of Physiology, PSG Institute of Medical Sciences and Research.

"We examined the effects of six xanthones from the pericarps of mangosteen, Garcinia mangostana, on the cell growth inhibition of human leukemia cell line HL60. All xanthones displayed growth inhibitory effects. Among them, alpha-mangostin showed complete inhibition at 10 microM through the induction of apoptosis." / (Gifu International Institute of Biotechnology: Induction of apoptosis by xanthones from mangosteen in human leukemia cell lines)

-     "Population-based studies and studies in experimental animals suggest that antioxidants reduce atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease" / January 18, 1998, workshop "Frontiers in Antioxidant Research: 14th Annual A.S.P.E.N. Workshop"

-     "Recent evidence has shown that suboptimal levels of vitamins, even well above those causing deficiency syndromes, are risk factors for chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and osteoporosis. A large proportion of the general population is apparently at increased risk for this reason... / (Vol. 287 No. 23, June 19, 2002, The Journal of American Medical Assoc., "Vitamins for Chronic Disease Prevention in Adults" by Robert H. Unjust Regulation:

Kids like Mangosteen, Kids love Vemma!Though numerous studies shows the importance of supplementation and the strong and direct link between vitamin and mineral deficiencies and chronic disease, here is our governments stance: "...it (supplements) must state in a "disclaimer" that FDA has not evaluated this claim. The disclaimer must also state that this product is not intended to "diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease," because only a drug can legally make such a claim."  (USFDA Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition:  http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/)

Let's get the facts straight?

Due to FDA regulation, no solid claims can be made concerning curative or preventative properties of the amazing Mangosteen fruit.

As you'll soon discover, the Mangosteen's powerful xanthones, exhibit many coveted health benefits.

Mangosteen Fruit displays many great possibilities that have been studied in the fields of anti-inflammatory, anti-carcinogenic (cancer fighting), ant-viral, anti-fungal, and the list goes on.  Is Mangosteen the cure-all of cure-alls?  The FDA says it cannot be a cure unless it is a drug.  Many once-ill individuals would certainly disagree.
